The /unsw/projects/ax25 directory contains the technical details of a hardware implementation of AX.25 Amateur Packet Radio Protocol for low power applications.
This project was completed by Tomas Renard Djunaedi for the Taste of Research Summer Scholarship Program in 2005.
This project is aimed at developing a lightweight wireless communication protocol for use in embedded sensor networks. The primary concerns in such application is power consumption and efficiency as these devices ideally has to operate for years in between battery replacement to be economically and logistically feasible. The design is based on AX.25 as it is a tested and proven protocol having served the amateur radio community for many decades. The FPGA based implementation has capability to support both connection based and connectionless communications with support for a wide range of physical and network layer protocols. However due to the size limitation of the available FPGA, only the stripped down version of the full protocol called AX.25 Lite has been implemented and tested on hardware. A simple messaging program has also been written to demonstrate the operation of the project on the DSLMU board.
