Companion CD-ROM: /unsw/projects/firewall directory

The /unsw/projects/firewall directory contains the technical details of an implementation of a firewall processor in hardware.

The work was done by Chong Bing Herng as a thesis project in 2004.

Thesis Title

Efficient Hardware Implementation of a Firewall Processor

Thesis Abstract

This project concerns data network security and digital design. Currently, most firewall implementations are software-based. However, software-based firewalls have the disadvantage of suffering from increased look-up time as the sets of filter rules start to increase and hence it bottlenecks the data transfer rate of the network it protects. By employing high density Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs), it is possible to develop firewall processors in hardware that are far more efficient than their software counter-parts. The aim of this project is to design an efficient firewall processor capable of capturing user definable firewall rules on hardware.
